Responsibilities

Designing custom manufacturing equipment and fixtures based on direction from a multi-disciplined team including industrial design, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing process engineering. The custom equipment will utilize basic pneumatics, electronics, machined metal components, and a variety of off-the-shelf hardware. Fabrication will be conducted at local machine shops and vendors making similar types of equipment. Sourcing of materials and sub-components and incorporating them into the custom designs is a critical aspect of the job. This sometimes includes sourcing and management of the fabrication vendors as well.

Skills & experience requirements

  • Creative problem-solving using 3D-CAD and computer modeling of custom manufacturing equipment and fixtures
  • Having strong mechanical aptitude to build mechanisms, linkages, and assemblies
  • Having broad knowledge of fabrication processes for plastics and metals including machining, thermoforming, laser-cutting, welding, casting, molding, and sanding
  • Making 3D-CAD files and 2D mechanical drawing documentation to be used for prototyping, quote package, and fabrication of equipment at external vendors
  • Have hands-on experience building prototypes and proof of concept samples
  • Have hands-on experience using 3D printing / rapid prototyping processes
  • Have a thorough understanding and application of LEAN manufacturing principles
  • Have familiarity with ISO 9001 quality and compliance requirements
  • Experience with product data management (PDM) for controlling version history and quality

Professional mastery of how to effectively use the following 3D-CAD software:

SOLIDWORKS (or similar)
